Brief Introduction of Huanxiu Villa
The history of the Mountain Villa with Embracing Beauty may date back to the Jin dynasty (265–420), when Education Minister Wang Xun and his brother Wang Min donated their residential house to build Jingde Temple. The Mountain Villa with Embracing Beauty also named Huanxiu Villa, is one of the more impressive smaller UNESCO gardens in Suzhou.
The history of the Mountain Villa with Embracing Beauty may date back to the Jin dynasty (265–420), when Education Minister Wang Xun and his brother Wang Min donated their residential house to build Jingde Temple. Huanxiu Villa is located on No. 272 Jingde road, inside the Embroidery Museum in Suzhou. This garden was recognized with other classical Suzhou gardens as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The garden gained its reputation for its rockery ever since. Wang Zhou, Director of Works, bought the garden and renamed it Mountain Villa of Embraced Beauty. In 1949 the garden became property of the government and in 1988 was declared a major historic site.
Architecture & Garden Design
Huanxiu Villa is an ancient garden emphasizing interesting rockery and is taken as a representative of this kind of work. The landscaping that visitors now see was created by a specialist in piling Qing Dynasty rocks, resembling contemporary painting style.
To get to this garden is a little tricky, as the entrance is inside a park for the Suzhou Embroidery Museum which is located on the side of the villa. As you can guess, this was once a residence but you can only enter a small number of the buildings which is a shame. The mountain villa covers an area of 0.2 hectare, with houses built in front of a garden. Rockeries and the pond in which they are displayed form the centerpiece of the entire garden. To the west of the pond there are the side chamber and a corridor.
The rockwork was created in 1807 by Ge Yuliang, an expert of artificial mountains. Perfectly blending with the scenes in the entire garden, it imparts a wonderland to evoke memory of a masterpiece of traditional Chinese landscape painting. The caves in the rockeries contain vaulted or arched roofs, peaks, ridges, secluded valleys, precipice trails and cliffs. All of them have distinctive features just like those in the true mountains. It is the most outstanding agglomeration of rocks among all the gardens in Suzhou. In addition, it is a recreation of the five important mountains of China, and shows a mastery of creating a sense of vast space in a small area.
The small pond and corresponding rock garden are impressive and should give you a taste of what to expect before you visit the Lion Grove Garden located North East of this garden.
